With the number of British Citizens emigrating having risen by a fifth last year, the figure rose to a tremendous 154,000, all in search of greener grass in foreign fields. In an unrelated statistic, it has also been found by the Organisation for Economic Co-Operation, that 1.3 million Britons with higher-level education are now also living abroad, bringing the total number of highly-skilled Britons to a prodigious 1.28 million, more than any other developed country.

The Office of Statistics has also found that there have been an increasing number of Cambridge, Oxford and Exeter students moving abroad to start their career. Nearly 1 in 10 students in 2011 found jobs working overseas which is of course generating a great concern for the British economy. The Government has recently stated that they wish to raise their attempt in encouraging graduates to stay in Britain, who seem to be under the impression that they will be living a higher-quality and more affordable lifestyle in countries such as Spain and Dubai.

Secretary of Committee of Backbench MP’s has stated, “My concern is that people are putting their own interests first and looking beyond the European Union. We have to convince those people, who we have invested so much in, to make Britain their first choice. We have to continue to drive lower taxes, we have to keep driving the change and reform in our public services.

With the number of British emigrants now almost equivalent to the number of foreigners choosing to leave the country, it seems that the Government will indeed need to ameliorate and retain their efforts to keep Brits in Britain.
